The Story of the Island

The year is 1743. The fearsome pirate Lea laLivre is sailing the high seas. He is racing to make his way back to his home island. For in the hold of his ship he has a cargo worth more than gold. He carries a treasure of books.

Under cover of darkness he finally reaches home. He sails his ship in as close as he dares. One by one his men load the chests into the rowboats. They race toward shore. They must get the treasure buried before they are caught.

The men work all through the night. And all through the night, laLivre shouts at them. "Put that chest over there. Dig that hole deeper. Bury that one here." Before morning comes, all the chests are buried or hidden in caves.

And it is just in time. As the sun comes over the horizon, so do the king’s soldiers. laLivre and his men race to their ship. They throw up the sails and point themselves into the wind. Now they are running for their lives.

But they are too late. The king’s ship is faster, and there is nowhere for laLivre to go. But he refuses to go down without a fight. He and his men arm their guns. When the king’s ship comes along side, they fight. But they are outnumbered. Soon all of laLivre’s men are dead. There is no one who knows where the treasure is buried.

Years pass. And one day the island is bought! The new owners turn it into a summer camp. It has been so long that no one remembers about the buried treasure. No one knows where it is. But it is still there, waiting for you to find it.

See if you can find a treasure chest of books. When you find them, print out as many as you like. They are yours to keep.

And come back often. New treasures are always being found here.
