Chief Joseph: Nez Perce Leader
|---|---|---|
Authors: Charles A. Eastman Chief Joseph was a young man when the white people entered the Imnaha Valley in Oregon. These were Joseph's ancestral lands. He had promised his father on his death bed that he would not give up these lands. Then the white man said that other Nez Perce had signed a treaty for him. Joseph and his people must leave the valley and go to a reservation, or they would all die. Instead, Joseph decided to lead his people to Canada, and freedom. Here is the story of their flight, and the life of Joseph, leader of the Nez Perce.
